Entertainment and electronics giant Sony recently completed the acquisition of Beyond Sports, a company that specializes in using real-world data to produce 3D animation. With this purchase, the company is now said to be able to offer a full metaverse experience for sports matches, complete with technology from other companies already in its portfolio.
Buying Sony’s Beyond Sports brings it closer to the Sports Metaverse
Sony is now foraying into the sports metaverse. The company recently closed the acquisition of Beyond Sports, a 3D imaging and animation company that has the technology to transform real-world information from a sports match into a metaverse representation. The takeover figures were not disclosed, but it is believed to be up to $70 million, according to the company Nikki estimates.
This purchase, along with Hawk-Eye Innovations technology – another company owned by the group – will allow the company to produce real-time content related to basketball, baseball, tennis and soccer matches. Acquired in 2011, Hawk-Eye Innovations produces technology that allows the ball to be located at any time, and organizations such as the National Football League (NFL) and National Hockey League (NHL) have used it.
The combination of these two things could allow Sony to create an accurate digital representation of a field or court that features realistic movement of the ball and players.
Virtual Sports Market
Another Sony-owned company could bridge the distribution gap to bring these experiences to the masses. Pulselive, a company that operates multiple websites for sports teams and organizations, will be able to embed these metaverse experiences on these sites, creating a new revenue stream and taking a shot at promoting this new game of sports.
Sony may also be able to offer metaverse matches by using its line of Playstation consoles as a distribution device. The company is developing a virtual reality (VR) headset exclusively for its console, dubbed Playstation VR 2, which is confirmed to launch in February 2023, and can be used to enjoy these metaverse experiences in an immersive way.
Sony has already dealt with the metaverse and NFT (Non-Fungible Token) technology, filing A suite of patents for using NFTs as a way to track the history and ownership of in-game assets. Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida also has it advertiser Before that, Sony’s “number one priority was to create a reflection around entertainment”, using all the tools the brand had for this.
